The 14-day training voyage departed Brisbane on 10 September 2026 aboard CSIRO research vessel Investigator and is scheduled to arrive in Fiji on 23 September. Students will receive practical experience in geology, biology, chemistry, physical oceanography and atmospheric science.
CAPSTAN is a national tertiary sea-training initiative involving CSIRO, the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies and the Australian and New Zealand International Scientific Drilling Consortium. The program is designed to expose postgraduate students to multidisciplinary marine research and the equipment used aboard a dedicated ocean research vessel.
Organisers said the international voyage also provides experience in scientific cooperation with Australia’s Pacific neighbours. The route crosses the Coral Sea and western Pacific, giving students an opportunity to learn about ocean stewardship and regional research collaboration.
