The Australian and New South Wales governments said the M1 extension and the associated Hexham Straight widening projects represent a combined investment of $2.24 billion. Federal funding accounts for $1.79 billion, with the NSW Government contributing $448 million.
More than four million construction hours went into the project, which involved about 2,700 workers. Government estimates indicate that roughly 70 per cent of the workforce came from the Hunter region, and the motorway opened about a year and a half earlier than originally planned.
The connection is expected to improve freight movement, reduce pressure through Hexham and Heatherbrae and support a Hunter population projected to approach 950,000 by 2041. Road users should continue to follow posted speed limits and current traffic directions as the new route begins operation.
