The Australian Medical Association wants earlier clarity on health staffing for Far North Queensland as major Cairns Hospital upgrades approach.

AMA vice president and Cairns orthopaedic surgeon Sarah Coll said staff and their families need more certainty about the workforce plan, according to ABC Far North's 19 October local briefing. The Queensland Government told the ABC that its health workforce plan would be released by the end of the year. The concern is about future staffing and service capacity; it is not an announcement that existing hospital services are closing.

In a separate 14 October national statement, the AMA called for coordinated rural workforce planning, sustained investment in training and infrastructure, and support for doctors and their families. That broader position provides context for the Far North appeal but does not itself announce a Queensland plan.

Patients should continue to rely on their treating service for individual appointment and care information.
