Australians have joined a community walk calling for an end to violence against women and children, with participants gathering in Sydney and taking part remotely across the country.
Walk for WAGEC offered a five-kilometre walk and a 10-kilometre run at Centennial Park on Sunday, September 13. The event raises funds for support services that help women and children escape violence and rebuild their lives.
Governor-General Sam Mostyn attended the Sydney event and described violence against women as an entrenched national problem, according to SBS News.
The organiser says the campaign has raised more than $2 million over its history. This year’s event combined fundraising with a public call for long-term action on Australia’s domestic and family violence crisis.
People experiencing domestic or family violence should contact emergency services if they are in immediate danger and use an accredited support service for confidential assistance.
