The proposed changes would also double the maximum penalties available for serious breaches. The government says more than five million accounts have been removed or deactivated since the restrictions began, although that figure is a government claim and does not by itself establish full compliance across every platform.
Communications Minister Anika Wells said the government is also preparing an exposure draft for a digital duty of care and reforms aimed at giving users more control over algorithmic recommendations.
The legislation will still need to pass Parliament. Details may change during debate, and the final scope of the regulator’s powers and penalties will depend on the enacted text.
