The Perinatal Acute Mental Health Hospital in the Home program is planned as a virtual inpatient admission model. Eligible patients will receive hospital-level care while remaining in their own homes.
The health service says the Queensland-first model will be supported by a multidisciplinary team including nurses, doctors, allied health professionals, people with lived experience and First Nations officers.
The program is intended to reduce the need for patients from the Cairns region to travel to south-east Queensland for acute treatment. It may also help families avoid separation, cultural disconnection and travel or accommodation costs during care.
The new service will connect with the region’s existing perinatal and infant mental health service so patients can transition between home-based and inpatient care when required.
