Home composting is receiving renewed attention as Queensland works to reduce the amount of food and garden waste sent to landfill.
The state's waste strategy aims to reduce residual waste by 65 per cent over the next decade. ABC News reported that organic material makes up about half of the waste placed in Queensland's red household bins and produces methane as it breaks down in landfill.
Only 11 of Queensland's 77 councils currently provide a kerbside green-bin service for garden waste, while food-organics and garden-organics services remain available in only some areas.
Waste specialists say backyard composting and worm farms can help households divert scraps where kerbside services are limited, but broader infrastructure and consistent government support are also needed.
