India has amended the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules to strengthen transparency and accountability across online marketplaces and shopping platforms.
The amendments address consumer grievances, search results, sponsored listings, price reductions, seller disclosures and the use of dark patterns that can manipulate a shopper’s choices. The new requirements are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.
Platforms will be expected to make paid or promoted content clearer and give consumers more meaningful information about sellers and pricing. The changes also reinforce obligations to provide accessible grievance processes.
The government said the National Consumer Helpline received 1,771,622 grievances in 2025, with 511,196 — about 29 per cent — related to e-commerce. Those figures underline the scale of consumer contact involving online transactions.
Businesses operating in India should review their interfaces, disclosure practices, seller onboarding and complaint-handling systems before the commencement date.
