Conservationists are moving female northern quolls carrying young into a fenced refuge near Townsville, an effort to establish a safer breeding population of the endangered marsupial.
Australian Wildlife Conservancy's Mount Zero-Taravale sanctuary has a 950-hectare predator-controlled enclosure. ABC North Queensland reported on 6 October that the team is targeting about 20 females with young for the relocation. Earlier this year, the conservancy had outlined plans to source quolls from its Far North Queensland conservation work and use the refuge to build a mainland population protected from feral predators.
The project is a conservation trial, not evidence that the species has recovered. Success will depend on the animals surviving, raising young and establishing a population over time. Northern quolls face pressures including feral cats and toxic cane toads.
