Queensland's local government leaders are meeting in Cairns this week for the 130th annual conference of the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ).
The association's event information lists the gathering at the Cairns Convention Centre from 19 to 21 October 2026. Its broader events guidance says the annual conference gives councils a forum for professional development, an annual general meeting and debate on issues affecting their communities.
Those debates can shape the association's advocacy. In its June meeting papers, Whitsunday Regional Council described the conference motion process as a way for councils to put proposed policy positions before other local governments. It listed proposals on state policy impacts, infrastructure charges and digital systems for consideration; their inclusion in the meeting papers does not mean they have been adopted by the conference.
With the three-day event still under way, final resolutions should be checked against the LGAQ's published outcomes after delegates vote.
