Applications are open for a Queensland and Australian government infrastructure fund intended to help bring forward housing in growth areas including the Mount Peter Priority Development Area near Cairns. The governments announced the new application process on 16 October.

The $2.4 billion Infrastructure Activation Fund is designed to support enabling works such as roads, water and wastewater services. Developers, councils and infrastructure providers can submit eligible project proposals to Economic Development Queensland.

The governments say the statewide initiative aims to unlock more than 50,000 homes across Mount Peter, Southern Thornlands, Waraba and other growth areas, with more than 20,500 intended to support first-home buyers. Those are program targets, not homes already built or projects already approved at Mount Peter.

Economic Development Queensland says grant funding includes $399 million from each government. Nearly $1.6 billion in zero-interest loans is also planned, with further loan-application and eligibility details to be released. The fund does not change the existing PDA planning framework; individual infrastructure projects and allocations have yet to be specified.
