Outback Queensland communities face another year of uncertainty over regional air services after a state contract review was delayed by 12 months.
Seven subsidised routes serving 23 Queensland towns operate under contracts held by QantasLink and Rex. The Department of Transport and Main Roads told ABC Western Queensland it had delayed a decision so it could consider feedback gathered through 37 consultation sessions.
Residents and local leaders say high fares can make essential travel difficult and deter tourism. ABC reported a recent Brisbane–Longreach return fare of $1,386 when booked five days ahead, although prices vary with timing and availability.
Qantas said in a submission that smaller Dash 8 aircraft were suitable for remote routes but cost more per passenger to operate than larger jets because they carry fewer people. The Australian Productivity Commission is separately examining regional air connectivity and expects a draft report in November.
