Australia is co-hosting Pacific climate talks in Fiji and Tuvalu this week, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese travelling to the two countries from 5 to 7 October, according to his office.
The Pacific Pre-COP runs in Nadi, Fiji, from 5 to 8 October. A leaders' event in Tuvalu is scheduled for 5 and 6 October to draw attention to the effects of climate change on the island nation and its responses. The Australian government says more than 50 countries are expected to take part in the wider gathering.
Australia is co-hosting the event with Fiji and Tuvalu after securing the role of COP31 president of negotiations. The talks are intended to bring Pacific priorities into preparations for COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, in November. The gathering is preparatory; it should not be described as having produced a negotiated climate agreement before outcomes are announced.
