Australia is investigating how a consignment of unserviceable F-35 aircraft components was unexpectedly diverted to Hong Kong after leaving the country earlier in 2026.
Defence Minister Richard Marles said Australia was working with the United States and F-35 manufacturer Lockheed Martin while examining the Australian end of the shipment. He said his understanding was that the consignment did not contain sensitive equipment or parts.
The cause of the diversion and the precise chain of custody have not been publicly established. Reporting that described particular components in the shipment remains subject to the continuing investigation, and authorities have not announced a final finding.
The incident has renewed attention on security controls surrounding the international F-35 supply chain. Marles said the investigation was being managed by the United States and Lockheed Martin, with Australia cooperating.
