An expansion at Cairns State Special School has officially opened, adding spaces designed for learning and specialist support, according to a Queensland Government announcement on 20 October.
The government says the project includes two new buildings and outdoor learning areas. Across the expansion are eight learning spaces, therapy and sensory rooms, specialist equipment, musical instruments, a playground and additional parking.
The opening is part of a wider state program of new and upgraded special schools. The government's statement identifies 11 schools due for upgrades and nine new special schools statewide, but does not give a separate project cost for the Cairns expansion.
Principal Alicia Smith said the new facilities would support tailored learning. The public announcement does not report measured educational outcomes from the newly opened spaces; those would need to be assessed after use.
